Having a conversation with a friend who is a wincest fan, and I don’t think communication between the two sides of the fandom could be much worse. She’s enlightening me as to what their side of the fandom thinks about ours, and it’s with the same distaste and exasperation that we have for the the…
To this I would have to say that I absolutely adore Jared as an actor and Sam as a character. I wish they would do more with him because he hasn’t gotten a really extensive story arc since about season five. The Gadreel arc only lasted a few episodes and it should have been longer.
As far as Cas serving Destiel… I love Cas. I think Cas is an excellent character and I’m constantly in a state of half-furious wth the writers when they make his story lines redundant or underplay his age and experience for cheap woobie thrills. If they gave Cas his own show, I would watch the shit out of that.
But I am a destiel fan, and I would be a destiel fan even if Cas were in a female body. Of course, if Cas were a chick, she and Dean would have gotten together years ago, and that also pisses me off.
The problem I have with wincest is a purely fan thing. I think it degrades the characters and I find it entirely disrespectful to Sam and Dean. They’re brothers. They love each other, they depend on each other, and they would die for each other. I think that if you can’t understand that kind of love without sexualizing it, then the fault is yours, not the writer’s.
I don’t mean to piss anyone off, those are just my feelings on the matter. You can say “oh, but would you feel that way if Sam and Dean weren’t blood relations” and I’d say yes. Because, to put it as Bobby did, family don’t end with blood. And Sam and Dean would be brothers no matter who their parents were. There is zero sexual chemistry between them, and they were absolutely horrified at the prospect when they found out about “Sam-Slash-Dean” in that one episode where it was brought up in canon.
Now, a person could make a good case for being anti-Destiel on those exact same grounds. Dean tells Cas on several occasions that Cas is like a brother to him. However, third-party characters like Meg and Balthazar and Crowley make reference to the two being more than friends. Yes, you can say they’re just poking fun but the way certain shots are set up and certain lines are said definitely build subtext.
Personally, I don’t know why it’s a friggin issue. There is more important stuff going on in the show than which fictional character is boning which fictional character.
If you wanna think two brothers are fucking behind the scenes, you absolutely have the right to do so. I have the right to tell you to maybe stop watching Hotel New Hampshire. If you wanna think Dean is maybe more bi than he likes to admit, and he really wants to plow the angel, go right ahead. Other people have the right to disagree.
As for me, if I’m gonna bitch about Supernatural it’s going to have to do wth the fact that Odin would kick Lucifer’s indolent ass, Zeus is the friggin king of the gods and not a Monster-Of-The-week, and we are ten motherfucking seasons into this damn show with not a single Fae arc longer than one episode to show for it!! I am so sick of the angels and demons plot that I don’t even know what and while this show just keeps chasing it’s own tail, Teen Wolf is kicking ass, Cal Leandros is taking names, and Harry Dresden is burning shit down. I love the Winchesters, but the writers need to stop throwing darts at an Encyclopedia of Monsters and start coming up with fresh ideas or this show is going to sink.
